Born in 1958 in Antwerp, the plastician artist, director, choreographer, stage producer JAN FABRE has the same sense of observation on human than his famous entomologist ancestor, who was himself focusing on insect. As early as 1976 he practices performing, DADA and belgium surrealist heritage.
Since 1980 he staged around 30 choregraphies and shows, mixing radical spirit and controversy « I am blood » in 2000 or « tolerance orgia » in 2009. Polymorphic artist he doesn't cease to draw, creates sculptures, photos or installations, where he has conjugated since the 90's his favorite themes like metamorphosis, transformation, he proclaims himself « beauty artist » and his art as a personal and universal therapy.
-On various mediums (letters, water color, iridescent variations on peacock's feathers, scarabbes, shining armors), he reinvents his own support/surface - Iin his Louvres exhibit in 2008 "The angel of metamorphosis" that willl give him international recognition at the Biennale in Venice (2007-2009) Nice's MAM (2003) Anvers (2006) and today his quasi retrospective in 2011 at the « KunstHistorisches museum's » in Vienna, Jan Fabre, « The blue hours years » art pieces realized between 1986 and 1991.
Occupying the 2 spaces at gallery Daniel Templon in Paris, the artist who is obsessed with everything that changes exhibits 2 plastic projects: His art work, between material and spiritual are designed around the representation of "altered" brains and other graphite self portraits as Jacques Mesrine, a clown, a victim or a monster.
This "alchimist gangster" practices his own form of subliminal misuse of the brain organ, physical counterpart of the intellect and location of human creativity.
Faithful to his principle of interacting with Art and Science activities he has a conversation with the great scientist Edward.O.Wilson in a video «Is the brain the most sexy part of the body».
Art and science, transformation, mutation, performance, sketches, photos, sculptures, movies,from this mutation actor between mind and body. We could almost say that he's a TRANSFORMER of contemporary Art, from brain to hand.
