"Out of the sea"
A physical apprearance close to the Arthurian legends, a passion for costumes decadent and antique, flamboyant and rich: ROMAIN BRAU.
During his presentation in Paris and the projection of his "Out of the Sea" movie, the young creator invites us in his world, on the tables are laying several young Adonis, posing and pleasing.
Danaïs Salander: How did you get to where you are?
Romain Brau: I went to Anvers'Fashion Academy and decided to start my own brand in 2010.
DS: Is it a life choice to be designer?
RB: I never wanted to be a designer!!I don't even like it!!I've always been a fan of costume, drama and role play!!I'm crazy for historic and ethnic costumes!!
DS: Are your inspirations mainly from cinema?
RB: I think I have a lot of sources of inspiration. a movie or a song, maybe a fiction novel..
DS: Overlapping modern and traditional, what do you perceive as old and new?
RB: I'm incapable of copy!!I can't t stand people who have the nerve to do this!!I like to be influenced or inspired and it's often something old.The way I interpret my inspiration is always very personal therefore it's new and original!!That's the perfect mix between old and new.
DS: Can you imagine a Romain Brau collection for women?
RB: Of course!!I did a lot of women clothings, wedding dresses, opera singer costumes...Unfortunately I love to dress people up!!It's not always very practical! But I tend to lean toward pleasing enough that the person will forget how heavy or painful the garnment might be!!
DS: Why the title "Out of the Sea?"
RB: I'm obsessed with legends and fantastic!!the mermaids..I dream to be one!!"Out of the Sea" is a collection of merboys..Out of the water..A mix of suffering, desire, liberation and fatalism! The feathers are very important in those collections because they follow the motion of the wind like the algea with the water...
DS: Forever Glam?
RB: It's so trendy to be trendy that it makes me sick!!We forget what it is to be elegant and beautiful!I want to bring back the youth on something heavier, more worked on, more luxurious and crazy!!
DS: Do you have desire for movie costumes?
RB: Cinema!! Yes but not now!!I dream of building a team. We are three now and I want an army!!Of mad eople and artists so we can really have some fun!!
DS: What fascinates you?
