Kimiko Yoshida's almost monochrome, subtly lit, large-fromat square self-portraits have been her signature since the series entitled Single Brides, begun in 2001. The artist, who sees a sign of infinity in monochrome, sees the self-portrait as a disappearance: determined by the experience of transformation, her art constitutes a highly contemporary exploration of willing servitude, gender stereotypes, and the determinism of heredity. 'Art is a delicate process of transposition, a determined struggle against the state of things. Being where I do not think I am, that is what is important'. Her new series, which alludes to the history of art, is called Painting. Self-portrait. This symbolic transposition of works of old masters into large-format prints on canvas is based ont the reappropriation of Haute Couture clothes (as for example Paco Rabanne...).
